The daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, wife of Ahab king of Israel; she cut off the prophets of the LORD and fed the prophets of Baal at her table; after Carmel she sent to Elijah, 'So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow'; when Ahab lay sulking over Naboth's vineyard she said, 'Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel?… I will give thee the vineyard', and wrote letters in Ahab's name; it is written, 'there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness… whom Jezebel his wife stirred up'. When Jehu came to Jezreel she painted her face, tired her head and looked out at a window, and the word of the LORD by Elijah came to pass.
Confirmed by history: Her husband Ahab is named on an Assyrian stone (the Kurkh Monolith, 853 BC), and Jehu, who came to Jezreel against her, on the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III (841 BC).
